Welcome to Rehoboth Beach! Come enjoy an old fashioned beach vacation where you can enjoy the boardwalk with shops, restaurants, Funland for the kids, and the Bandstand for free concerts! Rehoboth is the largest beach resort in the State of Delaware. It hosts visitors from all over the country, and the world. With many events and activities now scheduled throughout the year, Rehoboth Beach is now known as a year round vacation destination for business and pleasure.
The name originated from Rehoboth Bay which was named in the 17th century by early English explorers from the Virginia colony, while searching for a passage west. The unknown Captain who discovered the bay took the name from the Bible, Genesis, 26: 22, which means “broad places.” In 1872, the Reverend Robert W. Todd found himself inspired with the idea of having a Christian sea-side resort for this area. In January of 1873, he established “The Rehoboth Beach Camp Meeting Association of the Methodist Episcopal Church” with the purpose of creating religious “camp meetings” in the summer months. The camp meetings extended to the town which was laid out in a fan shape design with wide streets, parks and spacious lots. Later, downtown Rehoboth Beach developed in the era of Victorian influences and evolved throughout the 20th century to change with the times. Both the residential and commercial areas, continue to grow and change into the 21st century. However, Rehoboth Beach has still maintained the family, friendly, charm and atmosphere that resonates with Rehoboth Beach’s historic past.
Rehoboth Beach has remained proud of its religious beginnings and its family oriented atmosphere for almost 150 years. Funland has been owned and operated by generations of family. The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand has provided many performers the chance to showcase their talents as well as provide the visitors of Rehoboth Beach with something FREE to look forward to summer after summer. Throughout the summer and year, Rehoboth Beach continues to be a successful seaside resort and a popular place to visit!
